Huge California 2001 Horizontal Tasting

Very rarely does a vintage like this come along. Considered by most to be the best vintage in California, since 1970. That's 41 years.

Robert Parker, rated the vintage (96). See vintage chart.

The 2007 vintage will be as great or better but you will need to wait another 10 years for those wines to mature.

For those of you keeping score. It's 5 Cabernet Sauvignon, 4 Meritage, 1 Merlot, 2 Syrah and 1 Petite Syrah. 4 Flagship wines. All 2001.

The BV George De Latour, was the favorite. Followed by the Merryvale Profile and the Coppola Rubicon. The Charles Creek was a pleasant surprise. The Shafer Syrah had off odors but they blew off after a few minutes. The Eagle Point Ranch was a dud. Lastly the Marietta petite syrah was still a powerhouse.
